The Veil
When searching for a full time maid, what are the questions we make sure to ask before hiring them?
Do you know how to cook? Will you be able to do all the household chores?
Unfortunately these are the same questions that the future mother in law of atleast half the female population of India would ask.
These are some of the obvious questions that would be asked including some more bizzare ones like what is the girl's skin tone!?
I am not even exxagerating, this is how fragile and inconsiderate they are when it comes to creating future for their daughters and daughter in law's.
Ironically, the girl has very little or no role at all when it comes to deciding her future, but she is given two great choices,
Either to answer the questions mentioned above with expected answers or HONOUR KILLED!
Ultimately when she choses the safe way,and has achieved in fulfilling the society's dream, she is rewarded with sharing her bedroom with a complete stranger.
Her days are filled with memories of her Father advising "Never talk to strangers" during her childhood creating a caos in her mind,if her Father ever really lived by the principle.
As she approached her co sister ( Her Brother in law's wife) to share her problems, she realised
that she was only 14 and too young to even understand any of them.
As she started to do the household chores alongside her housemaid, the only difference she could find between them was that she had her husband's sur name.
Soon, when tired of living for others, she goes to the kitchen to grab the knife to end her journey in the world,as she tries to do so,she realised its too late as she started to feel the future landlord of the house moving in her stomach.
She weeped and weeped until her eyes could stop producing tears as she realised she dint even have a choice to end her life, and that she has never taken a decision for herself in her entire life.
Sadly, there are millions and millions of women leading a life like this in rural india which is 60% of the indian population.Few changes can help achieve a girl's dream of living her own life.
To all the parents out there, Instead of saving money for your daughter's marriage, save money for your daughter's education.
She will value it more and will be able to earn the same money that you were saving up for her wedding in no time.
